Brief History of Graysville UMC
To understand where we are today, it is helpful to know where we came from. Enjoy this history!
Blackwell’s Chapel was established for Christians by early circuit riders of the Methodist Church in 1840. The first meeting house was a crude log structure with backless slab benches and a single wide door in a dense oak and hickory forest one mile from the present church location.
The approximate, original location is a few hundred feet west of Julian Road at the end of Karr Street in the East Brainerd section of Chattanooga. This chapel was in use when John Gray and Alan Kennedy came to North Georgia from England and settled in the area known as Pull Tight. A town was founded in 1849 and was named Graysville after the Gray family.
In the revival of 1868, more than a dozen new members were added to the congregation and it was decided that a more comfortable and larger building was needed. This new structure was erected at the present location in the town of Graysville in 1873 on land deeded by Mr. Kennedy. It was at this time that Blackwell’s Chapel became Graysville Methodist Church.
The original church, a white clapboard structure, was replaced in 1966 by the present sanctuary and educational building. Additions include: educational wings (1990s), gym (2000) and renovation of the sanctuary (2004). Come be a part of the future here!
